About California We the People
California – We the People is
a component of a national civic education program developed and
administered by the Center for
Civic Education through a network of coordinators in 50
states, 435 congressional districts, 4 trust territories, and
the District of Columbia
Established
in 1967, the Center for Civic
Education is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit
organization whose mission is to promote an enlightened and
responsible citizenry committed to the principles of democracy
and actively engaged in the practice of democracy in the United
States and other country.
California
– We the People specializes in providing assistance to K-12
public and private schools in civic education through a wide
range of critically acclaimed curricular, teacher-training, and
community based programs. The principal goals of these programs
are to help students develop:
(1) an
increased understanding of the institutions of American
constitutional democracy and the fundamental principles and
values upon which they are founded,
(2) the
skills necessary to participate as effective and responsible
citizens, and
(3) the
willingness to use democratic procedures for making
decisions and managing conflict.
California –
We the People is conducted by a network of
regional and
congressional district coordinators led by
David Richmond,
California State Coordinator. Programs administered include
We the
People: The Citizen and the Constitution and We the People: Project Citizen.
NEW ADDITIONS TO WEBSITE
Our website was developed to assist teachers, students, and
coordinators in implementing the We the People programs. As you
browse our website, you may want to pay close attention to our
resource and articles section, our support materials for the new
High School Text, as well as our testimonials from former
students and current teachers about the power of our program.
Below is a list of new items you will find on our site:
·
Standards correlations to all of our programs, including
Foundations for Democracy. These documents will assist
coordinators and teachers in their quest to acquire
administrative and district support for our programs. We also
have a WTP tri-level correlation that will show how our Level I,
II, and III texts work together to build conceptual
understanding of our constitutional system from 5th
grade through High School.
·
New Call for Volunteers and Supporters with Students and Teacher
testimonials as to how the program has affected their lives.
·
New Text Resources: These documents can be used by both
teachers and coordinators to help transition to the new edition
of the high school text. It may also be used to explain to
judges of district, region, and state events how the text has
changed and has it has remained the same. Included in this
section of our website our multiple power-point presentations
developed by Justice Sue Leeson (Ret.) of the Oregon Supreme
Court and a primary author of the new text. These power points
can be used by teachers and students to better under the content
found in the new text.
·
New, revised Guide to Building a We the People Program which
offers to narrative assistance to teachers just beginning their
We the People programs. A new pacing-guide, sequencing with
suggested enrichment activities has been developed.
