The California – We the People program is very grateful to those in the public and private sector who have provided us with support.  We encourage you to read the following testimonials from Students and Teachers from around the state and hope that their inspirational stories will motivate you to either provide some financial support or time to serve our statewide program.

Although California – We the People provides free textbooks and training for our programs, we do not have enough funding to provide adequate support for our schools who qualify for either the We the People, The Citizen and the Constitution State Finals in Sacramento, or the We the People, Project Citizen State Showcase in Sacramento.  The full competition fee for our Sacramento events is $125 per person to pay for meals and awards.  Schools, however, must also pay for hotel costs as well as transportation, which as many of you know, has increased significantly in the past year.  These other costs, rooming and transportation can total in some cases up to another $4000 to $6000 per school depending upon size of class and distance to travel.  Suffice it to say that given tighter and tighter school budgets, some schools in the past five years have not been able to make the trip.

Opportunities for sponsorship include financial support and or fundraising assistance as well as goods and services such as awards, snacks, printing, travel arrangements, hotel accommodations, etc. Again, we greatly appreciate our sponsors and thank them very often and publicly in legislative hearings, press releases, event programs, professional development trainings, presentations at conferences and on our website. If you would like to become a sponsor, please contact David Richmond, California State Coordinator at cawtp35@yahoo.com.

Thank you for your support!  I encourage you to read the following testimonials to hear from those who have participated state-wide about the powerful impact We the People has had on their lives.

Student Testimonials

Dear We the People Team Member:

So, it’s getting close to the end of your junior year and you have a bunch of stuff to do.  Don’t forget about We the People.  Seriously, it’s really fun!  When you get into your unit, you’ll make friends you’ll never forget.

You might have heard that this class involves a lot of work and is challenging.  Well, that’s true, but DON”T PANIC.  The knowledge you gain will help you in the future as an American Citizen. While you learn all this stuff you can bet you will have fun, too.  This class has both learning and major fun.

If you’re shy and don’t talk much, don’t let that worry you.  Your speaking ability will grow and you’ll be amazed at how your mouth won’t close and all the knowledge that comes out.

Denise Del Cid, class of 2008

Dear We the People Team Member:

We the People is one of the best programs I have participated in during my high school experience.  Not only does this class enhance both thinking and speaking skills, but it also builds leadership.  Since I have participated in this nationally recognized program my knowledge of the historical and contemporary issues of the Constitution has increased greatly.  Also, I am more aware of how the government influences my daily life.  I guarantee you that in this class you will share a family-like bond with both your class and your unit-mates.  I promise you that this program will have a positive influence in your life.

Class of 2008 WTP:
Stoney Glover signed up for the WTP class in the spring of 2007. I was
very concerned because he is a special ed student and had only had two
mainstream classes. I sat down and spoke with him about the challenges and
difficulties of the course relative to any course he has taken. He ensured
me that he loves government and history and he would give everything he
had to be a valuable and contributing member of the team. Stoney's writing
skills were poor, and he felt intimidated at first when he was in a class
with many high/overachieving students. Stoney was placed in Unit 6 because
he truly represents the common man. His mother is in recovery and his
father is in jail. Stoney could not afford a suit to wear and had very
little money. He was the largest financial supporter of his family, mom
and two brothers. We found a couple of suits for him, and the class
adopted his family for Christmas, buying gifts, decorations, etc., so that
his family could have a fantastic Christmas his senior year. The family
thanked all of us and Stoney told the class it was the best Christmas he
had ever had, not because of the gifts, but because so many people cared
and accepted him for who he is. This is not common in our community. The
other students learned to greatly admire and respect Stoney for his views
and work ethic. Though many of the students initially questioned whether
Stoney could handle the stress and pressure, in the end he was the student
that was most looked up to and admired. Stoney changed the view points and
perspectives of many of the students on the team. Stoney was a critical
component to our success last year, and his unit had the highest score of
the Unit 6's in the regional and state finals, and they earned some of the
highest scores in the national finals, too. Stoney was singled out by a
few judges at the regional, state, and national level for his insightful
and contributions. Stoney has had a major impact on me, and helped me to
put my life in a proper perspective. I took a big chance on Stoney (and in
the end it was not a chance it was a blessing), and he proved that he is a
smart as anyone on the team.
